W C Fields was born William Claude Dukenfield on 29th January 1880 and died on Christmas day the year after the Second World War ended. He was known as an actor, juggler and comedian and lived in the USA. He left home at the tender age of just eleven and entered the vaudeville circuit and by the age of twenty-one had become an accomplished juggler. He soon found that his act was more popular as he added dialogue to his juggling routine. W C Field's growing fame led Paramount to invite him to make a few feature length comedies and by 1934 he found himself a major movie star. Incidentally he was the original choice for the lead role in the 1939 version of The Wizard of Oz, but that plan never materialised. His deteriorating health meant that in his later years he restricted his appearances to cameo role and guest appearances.
