Vera Lynn was
born as Vera Welch on 20th March 1917 and started singing at the age of
seven before going on to become a force's sweetheart during the Second World
War, performing hits such as We'll Meet Again and White Cliffs of Dover that
have become timeless classics and the embodiment of British resistance to
Nazi threat during the bitter conflict. Lynn took her stage name from her
grandmother. Becoming a national treasure over the ensuing years, Vera Lynn was recognised on Pink Floyd's The Wall album. Although her last public performance was in 1995 at a ceremony to mark the golden jubilee of VE day outside Buckingham palace in London, she had further chart success with her Very Best of Vera Lynn album in
2009 and, in 2017, released Vera Lynn 100, a compilation album of hits to commemorate her centenary which went on to become a number three album chart hit making her the first centenarian performer to have a Top 10 album in the charts. Vera died on 18th June 2020 at the age of 103 having been active in the music industry for 96 years.
