Sting was born as Gordon Sumner on 2nd
October 1951 and commented that his musical career almost started
by accident. As he explains "An uncle of mine emigrated to Canada
and couldn't take his guitar with him. When I found it in the
attic, I'd found a friend for life." He went on to become the main songwriter, lead singer, and bassist for new wave rock band the Police from 1977 to 1984 before launching a solo career in 1985. He has now sold over 100 million
records and is a strong advocate of rainforest preservation.
