Smokey Robinson was born as William Robinson on 19th February 1940. He got
the nickname "Smokey" from an uncle because of his love of cowboy movies. Smokey Robinson
went on to become not only an accomplished singer songwriter, but also
record producer and executive. His
successful career faltered however in the mid-1980s when he allegedly became
addicted to cocaine, and since then has periodically performed and toured. In the 2016 Robinson was awareded the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for his lifetime contributions to popular music.
