President Harry S Truman was born on 8th May 1884 and became the thirty
third President of the United States of America in 1945 following the death
of Franklin D Roosevelt.
Truman's Presidency saw great high and lows in popularity as he fought to
help the US emerge from the ravages of the Second World War and scored a
legendary come back kid moment in 1948 over his opponent Thomas E Dewey, an
election that had been called for his rival in the early editions of the
papers the night of the Presidential election.
However, Truman, more than others, understood the nature of politics. "A
politician is a man who understands government. A statesman is a politician
who's been dead for 15 years." Sure enough, President Truman is now
considered by historians to be one of the greatest U.S. Presidents.
